25 May Wong Foundation Powder Formulas
Two of the formulas we sent to ShareTanzania were custom created with the intent to help children challenged by food scarcity or physical impairment. Our Founder Dennis Wong is also the CEO of Baxco Pharmaceutical Inc, which helped us create these formulas through the work of their scientists, formulators, and state-of-the-art manufacturing facility.
In our discussions with the leader of Share Tanzania, John St Julien, we uncovered three key problems his team was facing when it came to the children’s diets. Firstly, the children who were discovered and brought into their care with malnutrition. Secondly, the children who suffered a physical disability that were unable to intake solid foods and needed the assistance of a feeding tube. And thirdly, the limited nutritional range of foods available in the region, where the population mainly lived on beans and rice. We set out to tackle each of these problems and provide a solution for each.
For the children with malnutrition, we gained knowledge on the condition and sought out solutions that have been utilized in the past. Due to the severity and fragility of a malnourished child’s state we sourced the exact products approved by the World Health Organization to tackle the problem; F-75 and F-100 Milk Powder Formulas, and Plumply Nut packets.
For the children in the second and third categories, we brought Baxco’s scientists and formulators together to create a specific solution for them. We needed to provide a wide array of vitamins, minerals, and caloric value in a format that could be poured down a feeding tube. With these goals in mind, we created two powdered formulas that could be easily mixed with water.
The first being our Wong Foundation Fruit & Veggie Mix which contains Banana, Strawberry, Coconut, Broccoli, Carrot, Spinach, Sweet Potato, Tomato, Apple, Bilberry, Baobab and Omega 3 powders. This formula was created to provide nutritional diversity with a wide array of fruit and vegetable powders. Our expert formulators were able to create a blend that tasted fruity and masked the taste of the more bitter vegetables to make it child-friendly.
The second formula was our Wong Foundation Protein Mix, which contains whey protein, milk powder, brown rice protein, collagen, and organic coconut sugar. This formula helps provide a high caloric value to the children, especially important for the ones who have difficulty consuming foods, to ensure they maintain a healthy weight. John St Julien had told us that the children loved chocolate, but very rarely came across it. We decided to make the protein powder chocolate flavored for this reason, and are excited to see how the kids like it!
The shipment of the formulas is currently on route and expected to arrive in Tanzania in the middle of June. We will keep you all updated on its arrival and use in the region!
